They have a new address! I found that out by going to their old one - thankfully the customer service lady was still working and was able to redirect me.

I just had the most amazing massage with Evelyn H. She does trigger point therapy and walks you through her entire process. It was all so clearly explained that I feel empowered to work on some of my problem areas on my own between sessions. If you like deep tissue massages and “good pain” type of deep tissue work, she is the one for you! Just amazing experience all around.

I’ve been going to Palm Leaf for years and consistently have great experiences. They have a wonderful variety of skilled professionals who truly know what they’re doing—and they listen and communicate to make sure you get exactly what you need. The setting is always relaxing, and scheduling online is super easy. Ramon is a rightfully proud and attentive owner who genuinely cares about his customers and their experience. Highly recommend!

Such a nice and soothing experience! I got the Reiki Massage from Sam B and she was great! She definitely has a healing touch and I felt so much lighter and relieved after. My partner also got the Fire Cupping Therapy through Sam, and he said it was incredibly relaxing and took a lot of pressure out of his back. Thank you so much to Sam! We’ll definitely come back here!

Just had another great massage at PalmLeaf. I go once or twice a year, often due to one or two problem areas. I've seen several therapists over the years and have always been impressed with their professionalism, attention to inputs, diligence at improving those areas, sensitivity to pain tolerance, and the overall comfortable ambiance.

This was my first experience with PalmLeaf Massage, and it was a good one, but I will try all of the masseuse, and see which one is the best fit for me.

Went to PalmLesf for the first time today. I am very picky about my massages and my massage with Eugene was fantastic! He thoroughly addressed all my problem areas and regularly checked in regarding pressure and adjusted accordingly. There was a small issue with my billing but Eugene and Ramon had it resolved before I even left the massage area.

Overall it was a great experience! I would tell everyone to visit but I don't want to have to fight for appointments. 😁

What is Fascia?

Fascia is a thin, flexible tissue layer that surrounds and supports your muscles, organs, nerves, and vessels. Because it contains nerves, it can become tight from stress, injury, or strain, causing stiffness and limited movement.

Therapies like Myofascial Release work by easing tension in the fascia, improving mobility and reducing pain.

How Does Myofascial Release Work?

Myofascial Release (MFR) is a hands-on therapy where a practitioner applies gentle, sustained pressure to ease tightness in the body. During a session, the therapist works on the fascia (the connective tissue around your muscles) searching for areas that feel tense or restricted. Normally, fascia is soft and flexible, but when it becomes tight, it can limit movement and cause discomfort.

So, how does myofascial release help?

How Does Myofascial Release Work?

Loosening Tight Fascia

Fascia tightens from injury, overuse, or too little movement, causing stiffness, discomfort, and reduced mobility. Myofascial release applies light, steady pressure to stretch and soften the fascia, easing pain and restoring flexibility.

Improving Blood and Lymph Flow

Better Circulation

Tight fascia can restrict healthy blood flow. Myofascial release helps improve blood and lymph circulation, allowing your body to remove waste more effectively and deliver fresh nutrients to your muscles supporting faster healing.

Relaxing Muscles

Muscle Stretching

The gentle stretching used in myofascial release helps relax tight muscles. It activates a natural reflex that encourages the muscle to release, easing tension and improving movement.

Nervous System Effects

Myofascial release helps activate the body’s natural pain-relief system by targeting tight trigger points, easing discomfort and improving how you feel. When the fascia becomes more flexible, it also enhances proprioception, helping you move with better balance and coordination.

Techniques: Types, How-to, and Practical Guides

At Palmleaf Massage, we use different types of Myofascial Release (MFR) techniques to help reduce pain and improve movement. Here, we’ll explain the main types of MFR techniques we use and how you can also try some of these methods at home.

What Does Myofascial Release Therapy Treat?

At Palmleaf Massage, we use myofascial release to treat many different health issues, such as:

Myofascial Pain Syndrome

Tight, sensitive fascia causes ongoing muscle pain. MFR gently loosens this tissue to ease pain and improve movement.

Median nerve compression leads to pain and numbness. MFR reduces fascia tension in the wrists to relieve symptoms.

Lower Back Pain

Tight fascia in the lower back limits movement and causes pain. MFR relaxes the area, improving flexibility and reducing discomfort.

Fibromyalgia

A chronic condition with widespread pain and fatigue. MFR helps ease tension and supports better daily comfort.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder

Jaw joint and muscle pain can limit movement. MFR releases tight fascia around the jaw to reduce pain and improve motion.

Tight fascia in the neck and shoulders can trigger migraines. MFR eases this tension and may reduce headache frequency and intensity.

At Palmleaf Massage, we adjust our MFR techniques for each person, helping them feel better, move more easily, and get back to doing what they love.

Who Should Avoid Myofascial Release?

Absolute Contraindications

  • Malignancy (Cancer): Manipulating tissues can potentially spread malignant cells, making MFR unsafe for individuals with active cancer.
  • Aneurysms: The pressure applied during MFR may pose a risk of rupture for individuals with aneurysms.
  • Acute Infections: Systemic or localized infections may worsen or spread due to MFR techniques.

Regional Contraindications

  • Open Wounds or Burns: MFR directly affects the skin and underlying tissues, so it should not be performed on areas with open wounds, burns, or unhealed surgical incisions.
  • Healing Bone FracturesMFR should be avoided until the bone is fully healed to prevent interference with the natural healing process.
  • Hematomas or Bruised AreasApplying pressure to bruised areas can exacerbate the condition and cause further damage.

Specific Conditions to Consider

  • Acute Rheumatoid ArthritisInflammation and joint instability associated with acute rheumatoid arthritis can be exacerbated by MFR techniques.
  • Severe OsteoporosisFragile bones associated with severe osteoporosis can be damaged by the pressures applied during MFR.
  • Metabolic ConditionsIndividuals with metabolic conditions affecting tissue health or healing should avoid MFR without prior medical consultation.
  • Anticoagulant TherapyPeople taking blood thinners are at a higher risk of bruising or bleeding due to MFR techniques.
  • Underlying TumorsMFR should be avoided in areas where a tumor is present to prevent any potential complications.

Additional Considerations

  • Advanced DiabetesReduced tissue integrity and healing capacity in advanced diabetes may require caution or alternative therapies.
  • Advanced Degenerative Joint DiseasesConditions like severe osteoarthritis may require modified techniques or complete avoidance of MFR to prevent further joint damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Myofascial Release helps by gently stretching and loosening the fascia, which is the tissue that surrounds your muscles and organs. When this tissue gets tight, it can cause pain, make it hard to move, and put pressure on different parts of your body. MFR helps release these tight areas, which makes it easier to move, reduces pain, and helps you feel more relaxed. It also improves blood flow, reduces stiffness, and increases overall mobility.

Myofascial Release has a lot of benefits, including:

  • Pain Relief: It helps ease pain by loosening tight fascia, which can make muscles feel sore.
  • Better Movement: MFR makes it easier for your muscles and joints to move, improving your range of motion.
  • Improved Circulation: It helps blood and oxygen move more easily through your body, which helps with healing.
  • Relaxation: Releasing tightness in the fascia can help you feel more relaxed.
  • Stress Relief: Reducing tightness in your body can help you feel less stressed overall.

Releasing fascia is important because tight fascia can cause pain, poor posture, and make it hard to move. When fascia gets tight, it pulls on your muscles and other tissues, which can create a lot of tension. By releasing that tightness, you can move more easily, have less pain, and help your body feel more natural and comfortable.

Myofascial Release doesn’t target a specific organ. Instead, it focuses on the fascia, which is a type of connective tissue that surrounds all your organs, muscles, bones, and nerves. By loosening this tissue, MFR helps everything in your body work better together, which reduces pain and improves movement.

Fascia has three main functions:

  1. Support: It holds your muscles, organs, and bones in place, giving your body structure.
  2. Protection: It cushions your muscles and organs, helping protect them from injury.
  3. Movement: Fascia helps your muscles move smoothly by reducing friction between different tissues, making everything work well together.

Myofascial decompression, also called cupping, lifts and separates layers of fascia and muscle. Its benefits include:

  • Better Flexibility: It loosens the fascia, helping muscles move more freely.
  • Pain Relief: It helps reduce soreness and muscle tension by improving blood flow.
  • Improved Circulation: The suction created during cupping brings more blood and nutrients to the area, which helps it heal.
