Trigger Point Therapy is a focused treatment that targets “knots” in your muscles that cause pain or stiffness. These knots are small, tight areas of muscle that often stay contracted, sometimes causing pain to travel to other parts of your body. During a session, a therapist applies steady, firm pressure directly to these specific spots for a few seconds at a time. While it might feel a bit intense at first, the pressure helps the muscle finally relax and release its grip. This “reset” allows blood to flow back into the area, reducing pain and helping you move more freely and comfortably.
A trigger point is a hyper-irritable spot in a tight band of muscle, commonly known as a “knot.” These spots stay contracted and can’t relax on their own, which often limits your movement and causes a dull, aching sensation.
Trigger points are famous for “referred pain.” This means when a therapist presses on a knot in your shoulder, you might feel a sensation in your neck or down your arm. Relaxing that one spot often solves pain issues in other parts of your body.
You may feel some “productive” discomfort—often described as a “good hurt.” Because the therapist is applying direct pressure to a sensitive knot, it can feel intense for a few seconds, but it is quickly followed by a significant feeling of release and relaxation.
While many people feel immediate relief after one session, chronic knots that have been there for months may take 3 to 5 sessions to fully “retrain” the muscle to stay relaxed. Your therapist will create a plan based on your specific needs.
It is very important to drink plenty of water to help flush the area. We also recommend gentle stretching and a warm bath or heating pad later in the evening to keep the muscle fibers elongated and prevent the knot from tightening back up.
