Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a specialized, light-touch medical massage designed to stimulate the natural drainage of the lymph system. Unlike traditional massage that targets the muscles, MLD uses precise, rhythmic strokes to move fluid toward the lymph nodes. This clinical treatment is highly effective for reducing post-surgical swelling, detoxifying the body, and supporting a healthy immune system by clearing cellular waste and congestion.
Traditional massage uses firm pressure to manipulate muscles. MLD is a “skin-stretching” technique that uses very light, rhythmic pressure. Because the lymphatic vessels are located just beneath the skin, deep pressure actually collapses them; a light touch is required to keep them open and moving.
Not at all. In fact, many clients find it more relaxing than a Swedish massage. There is no deep tissue work or “kneading,” so there is no soreness involved. Most clients leave feeling light, energized, and deeply relaxed.
The most important preparation is hydration. Drink plenty of water before your appointment to help your system move fluid more easily. We also recommend avoiding heavy meals for an hour before your session, as much of the lymphatic system is concentrated in the abdomen.
Yes, this is very common and a sign that the treatment worked. As the lymph system clears excess fluid and toxins, your kidneys process them for elimination. We encourage drinking extra water for 24 hours post-session to assist this process.
For post-surgical recovery, a series of 3 to 5 sessions close together is often recommended. For general wellness or detoxification, one session per month is usually sufficient. Your therapist will tailor a plan based on your specific health goals.
