W-2 vs. 1099 Comparison

Compare compensation beyond the hourly rate.

Understand the key differences between W-2 and 1099 massage therapist compensation, taxes, and responsibilities.

$35 W-2 Is Not the Same as $35 1099

W-2 employees and 1099 independent contractors have different tax, employment and business responsibilities.

W-2 = Front-End Tax Handling

Applicable taxes are generally withheld through payroll before you receive your net paycheck.

Gross Pay → Taxes Withheld → Net Pay

1099 = Back-End Tax Responsibility

The contractor generally receives gross compensation first and manages applicable taxes separately.

Gross Pay → Set Aside Taxes → Pay Taxes Separately

A 1099 payment may look higher when received, but the contractor still has taxes and business responsibilities to account for.

Compare the structure—not just the hourly number.
